Since the spike of COVID-19 infections and the implementation of the national lockdowns by our government, many South Africans have lost their jobs. The impact of this has been more prominent in disadvantaged communities where most households depend on one salary to feed many family members. With the loss of income, households were left with no means of buying food to feed their families.
In honour of Mandela’s birthday, Southgate Mall reached out to Ikageng, a community-based welfare organisation in Orlando West, Soweto. Ikageng has expressed the constant need for food supplies due to the major shortage they have been facing especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Southgate Mall in partnership with Pareto limited was able to deliver 102 Grocery Parcels to Ikageng in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s 102nd birthday.

Waja ka Meno Dental Health Awareness Day
The Waja Ka Meno Trust is an inspiring programme that was founded by one of our tenants, Dr Soukhat Waja, a local dentist and philanthropist. The trust was founded with the aim of providing free maxillofacial surgery, reconstructive dental surgery and general dental care to disabled and vulnerable children.
Southgate Mall is honoured to be involved with this organisation and in support of the annual dental health awareness day, we secured sponsorship for emergency medical services from Maponya 911. Marjorie Thekiso- Marketing Manager at Maponya 911 explains why they decided to get involved: “We believe that we need to give back to the community. This can be achieved by providing support to community-based projects such as the Waja ka Meno Day as projects like these enable us to create awareness for our service offering. We are with the community all the time however, people tend to think that we are not accessible as we are a private organisation. It is our aim to show that we are one with the community.”
The annual Dental Health Day continues to grow each year, Southgate Mall is proud to be part of the programme and would like to thank Dr Waja for his immense contribution to the community through the outreach programme, and its impact in the lives of those they serve.
